A STUPA FOR KHENSUR LAMA LHUNDRUP
Remembering and honoring our precious guru, abbot, teacher and spiritual friend
Khensur Lama Lhundrup passed away in September 2011 at Kopan Monastery, and was cremated here on advice of Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche. Special signs were observed during the cremation. On dismantling the cremation stupa one week later many precious relics were found, an indication of His spiritual attainments. The relics were carried in a solemn procession to the main gompa, and in a short ceremony prayers were made for the incarnation to return swiftly.
Lama Zopa was present throughout this critical time. He advised the Kopan community on the things needing to be done for the quick return of the incarnation, amongst them he advised
- A stupa should be built quickly at Kopan, near the cremation place. This stupa has been completed.
- A statue in the likeness of Khensur Lama Lhundrup should be commissioned, and this has been completed.
- To build a large Mahabodhi stupa, looking similar to the Mother Mahabodhi stupa in Patan and resembling the Bodhgaya stupa.
This stupa will be built at Khachoe Ghakyil Nunnery, in front of the new gompa. A complete new project grew out of this, integrating the stupa in the landscaping around the new gompa complex.
This magnificent stupa will house 9000 individual small Buddha statues set in exquisitely carved niches, one set of the 35 Confessional Buddhas, and a 5 feet statue of each Heruka, Maitreya, and Amitabha Buddha. The project will feature the stupa, complete with a small gompa in its base, in the middle of a kora (circumambulation) circle, surrounded by a debate house and other facilities. It will be an object of devotion for many generations to come, contributing to the survival of the Buddhas teachings in Nepal and in this world.
It will be filled with precious substances, holy objects such as hundreds of volumes of the Buddhas teachings, thousands of Tsa-tsas that are being prepared already, auspicious offerings and incense.
On the outside it will feature beautifully carved niches for the small Buddha statues, small types of chapels for the larger statues, and detailed decorations created by skilled artisans from Nepal.
