MEDICINE BUDDHA RETREAT 20 - 30 AUG, 2025

Medicine Buddha Retreat: Healing for Ourselves and the World
Dates: 20 - 30 Aug, 2025
Retreat Overview

Led by: Ven. Tenzin Namjong

When we face physical illness, emotional pain, or uncertainty in the world around us, it’s natural to want relief—not just for ourselves, but for others too. This retreat offers a space to explore how the Medicine Buddha practice can help us cultivate a healing presence, grounded in compassion and wisdom.

This practice isn’t limited to physical healing. As Lama Zopa Rinpoche reminds us,

“Normally people think that Medicine Buddha is for healing but it’s not only that! You can use the Medicine Buddha practice for ANY purpose, ANY problem, ANYTHING. The Medicine Buddha practice is so precious.”
It offers a versatile tool for developing clarity, strength, and resilience in the face of any challenge, whether it comes from within or from the world around us.

Throughout this retreat, we will deepen our connection to the Medicine Buddhas—not just as external figures, but as reflections of the potential for healing within our own minds.
We will explore:

  • The root causes of suffering
  • How our lives are deeply interconnected
  • Ways to develop compassion for ourselves and others
  • How to connect with the visualizations and healing energy of the Medicine Buddha practice

The core of the retreat will focus on engaging in the Medicine Buddha sadhana, including mantra recitation and visualization sessions—dedicated not only to our own healing, but also for the well-being of others and the environment.

This retreat is intended for those who have attended one of our 10-day Introduction to Buddhism courses (or similar), and who feel drawn to the Medicine Buddha practice. It’s a chance to step away from daily distractions, and turn toward the healing qualities we all carry within.

About the retreat leader:

Venerable Tenzin Namjong was born and raised in Hawai’i and studied philosophy at Princeton University. He began his spiritual journey in the Zen and Theravāda traditions before embracing Tibetan Buddhism, inspired by the profound kindness and teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

He completed seventeen years of rigorous study in the Geshe curriculum at Sera Je Monastery in Bylakuppe, India. Following the advice of Lama Zopa Rinpoche, he has now transitioned from academic study to focusing primarily on long-term solitary retreat.

Venerable Namjong is a registered teacher with the Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT) and, when not in retreat, teaches at FPMT centers around the world.
